Joseph Benavidez draws Alex Perez on The Ultimate Fighter 28 finale on Nov. 30

After losing UFC Denver opponent, Joseph Benavidez gets a new matchup against Alex Perez at The Ultimate Fighter 28 finale in Las Vegas.

It has been a rough week to be a UFC flyweight, especially if your name is Joseph Benavidez. After a long layoff dealing with injury, Benavidez then lost his UFC Denver matchup with Ray Borg when Borg was forced out due to a medical issue. After that, news broke that the UFC may be dissolving the flyweight division. Fortunately for Benavidez, the UFC has found him a new fight, against Alex Perez at The Ultimate Fighter 28 finale on Nov. 30 in Las Vegas. The fight was first announced by John Morgan of MMAJunkie.com.

Benavidez (25-5) has been a staple in the UFC flyweight division since it’s birth. Having fought Demetrious Johnson in the inaugural championship bout and once more years later, Benavidez has stayed atop the 125-pound rankings through his entire UFC career. Now that Johnson has left the UFC and there is a new champion at the helm to the division, this could have been the time for Benavidez to get a third shot at the title, especially since he holds a win over current champ Henry Cejudo.

This plan for another title shot could be no more now that the UFC seems to be closing down the division early next year. Bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw was just announced as dropping down in weight to challenge Cejudo. If the division is shut down, this fight with Perez could be the last at flyweight for Benavidez. Fighters in the division will either be cut or forced to move to bantamweight.

Perez (10-0) made a splash on The Dana White Tuesday Night Contender Series. Since getting the fight contract, Perez has gone 3-0 in the UFC. His most recent win came over former Titan FC champion Jose Torres at UFC 227 in August. Perez is currently ranked number 14 in the official UFC rankings.
