The Independent Investigations office has been called in following an officer-involved shooting that resulted in a man’s death near Mill Bay Saturday.
The Shawnigan Lake RCMP say they were following up on an assault investigation in the 1100 block of Mill Bay Road, and after 12:00 p.m. members attended a home with the intention of arresting a man in connection with the incident.
Upon entering the residence police say the officers were met with a man who they indicate advanced on them with an edged weapon. Members attempted to deploy a Conducted Energy Weapon without success. Shots were then fired by police.
The man was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. No police officers or any other members of the public were injured in the incident.
Witnesses say it occurred in the Cedar Creek Mobile Home Park. Neighbours of the man say they heard multiple shots before someone was taken out of the building on a stretcher and taken to hospital.
They say he was in his late 20’s and that the area is blocked off.
The RCMP say the scene and any evidence has been secured while IIO B.C. has been notified and are deploying. IIO BC will assume conduct of the investigation.
Additional RCMP resources have been deployed to Shawingan Lake in order to maintain core policing services.
Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact IIO B.C. at 1-855-446-8477.
